NASA Budget Faces Historic Cuts Under Trump’s 2026 Proposal: Gateway Project and SLS at Risk
NASA Budget Faces Historic Cuts Under Trump’s 2026 Proposal Gateway Project and SLS at Risk

In a dramatic shift for U.S. space policy, the Trump administration’s preliminary 2026 federal budget proposes slashing NASA’s funding by over $6 billion, marking the most significant single-year reduction in the agency’s 67-year history. The proposed budget would cancel high-profile programs, including the Gateway lunar space station, and begin phasing out both the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion capsule after just three missions.

A 24% Budget Cut: What’s on the Chopping Block?

The White House’s proposed NASA allocation would drop from $24.8 billion in 2025 to just $18.8 billion in 2026—a 24% decrease. According to The Planetary Society, this marks the steepest cut NASA has ever faced in a single fiscal year. The proposed reductions heavily impact NASA’s science and exploration divisions:

  • $2.3 billion cut from space science programs
  • $1.2 billion slashed from Earth science research
  • $900 million reduction for human exploration legacy programs
  • Cancellation of the Gateway lunar orbit station, a key hub for future Moon and Mars missions
  • Termination of NASA’s Mars sample return mission, a collaboration with the European Space Agency
  • Defunding of sustainable aviation initiatives and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs

The End of Gateway and a Pivot to Commercial Spaceflight

Perhaps most striking is the proposed cancellation of Gateway, a cornerstone project of NASA’s Artemis program. Gateway was intended to serve as a modular space station orbiting the Moon, supporting long-term human presence on the lunar surface and laying the groundwork for Mars-bound missions.

Also on the phase-out list are Boeing’s SLS rocket and Lockheed Martin’s Orion crew capsule, despite their enormous development costs—$26.4 billion and $21.5 billion, respectively. Under the proposed budget, both would see retirement after only three flights, with funding instead directed toward “more cost-effective commercial systems.”

This shift aligns with the growing reliance on private aerospace giants such as SpaceX (Elon Musk) and Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos), raising questions about potential political influence and the increasing privatization of U.S. space exploration.

Where Will the Money Go?

Despite sweeping cuts, the Trump administration’s budget proposal does allocate increases to selected areas of human spaceflight:

  • $650 million increase in human exploration spending
  • Over $7 billion boost toward lunar exploration
  • $1 billion set aside for new Mars exploration efforts

These reallocations suggest a strategic pivot away from long-term infrastructure and scientific research toward short-term lunar goals and partnerships with commercial space operators.

🏛️ Congress Has the Final Say

Importantly, these proposals are far from final. Congress must approve the 2026 budget, and many of these controversial provisions may face stiff opposition from lawmakers and space advocates alike. With waning political capital and public approval ratings falling, Trump’s ability to push such sweeping changes remains uncertain.

Still, the proposal reveals the administration’s vision for the future of American spaceflight—leaner, more privatized, and focused on geopolitical wins in lunar and Mars exploration rather than broad scientific discovery.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump’s 2026 budget would cut NASA’s funding by 24%, the largest single-year drop in agency history
  • Major programs like Gateway, SLS, and Orion would be cancelled or phased out
  • Focus shifts toward commercial spaceflight, lunar missions, and Mars exploration
  • Earth science and DEIA initiatives would lose funding

Congress still holds the power to approve or reject the proposed changes
